This sign is used to indicate the Russian ruble, which is the official currency of Russia.
It takes the shape of sans-serif font letter p with a horizontal line. This design was approved on the 11th of December 2013. Before this date, there was a long debate about how the symbol of the national currency should be. The government wanted the design to have the same level of recognition and the influence the other well-known currencies. For this particular reason, they held several contests to choose a design that will fit this description, but the central bank of Russia adopted none of them.
