The standardized definition of the "no symbol" comes right from the International Organization for Standardization.
In 2002, "ISO 3864-1" was first published. The introduction included language on the need for using as few words as possible to send the information. Hence, ISO 3864-1 sets the rules for the shape and color of safety signage. Besides, it regulates the incorporation of text according to signs size and viewing distance. The range of form and color for the no sign is defined in this standard for the "no symbol" as "a prohibition surround shape over the top of a black graphical symbol."

Since the standard of this, no symbol is not published fully freely, and many examples seen in public differ from the norm. Indeed, several public signs and symbols using it have not been based on the character's official standard, however, instead of on interpretations of signs or inexact copies of characters seen by each graphic artist. That has led to vast variations in sign dimensions and color. The most common variations that are seen appear to be brighter reds than the standard version. The sign is also seen with a far thinner width for the diagonal line and the right dimensions with the same width for slash as the red circle.
