History of Giant Food Store
In 1936, Cohen and Samuel Lehrman (Samuel Lehrman) jointly opened the first supermarket in Washington, DC, despite facing economic difficulties. Before this, most food stores were small and primarily relied on high prices to make money. The founders of Giant believed that a large store that offers many products and operates in a self-service manner could provide customers with food at a lower price. From the very beginning, Giant's founders realized that for a business to succeed, a large number of sales must be obtained, which depends on providing shoppers with a variety of quality products with the highest value and friendly customer service. Adhering to these principles, Giant Store No. 1 opened on Georgia Avenue in Washington, DC, on February 6, 1936, completely changing the retail food business in the Washington metropolitan area. Since 1936, the Giant has flourished, and until this day, it remains committed to the original principles of Mr. Cohen and Mr. Lehrman that are aimed to find ways to help customers save money and time.
Rebranding of Giant
Later. Giant Food Stores changed its new company name into The Giant Company and developed new logos to match. The logo for each banner in the family of brands – Giant Heirloom Market, Giant, Martin's, Martin's Direct, and Giant Direct – has been modernized, with the most notable characteristic of the new design. The leaf that's part of the "A" in each banner name highlights the company's commitment to freshness and growth. In addition, Giant adopted the latest color and design solutions, emphasizing the brand's modern, exciting and caring culture and the commitment to grow together with customers and partners. The new giant logo has been installed outside the giant center, representing a 10,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Hershey.
Future Plans of Giant
The company also plans to integrate the new name and logo into its operations at its corporate headquarters in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Giant operates in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, employing more than 33,000 employees. It serves nearly 132 pharmacies, 190 stores, 105 gas stations, more than 125 online pickup centers, and grocery delivery services. The parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA, is ranked fourth in Progressive Grocer's 2019 list of the top 50 American grocery stores.
